PROLOGUE TO THE MASS: THE HOLY ROSARY
In Northern Portugal in the Archdiocese of Braga, as at NS Lapa in the Church depicted below, the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass is often attached to the Holy Rosary which precedes it.
The Rosary in Portugal like in other countries can be a sort of prologue to every single mass, that is, depending on the Spiritual Direction offered by the pastor, the resources available via the pastoral teams present (and their ability to lead a regular Rosary), and the commitment of the Church community itself to this devotion.
TIP: Want to find a Rosary in Portugal? Look for any Rosary in Portugal in this way: find out the mass time, and then go to the Church at least 35 to 45 minutes before the Holy Mass. Likely, if you find people gathering (stick around to ask the Parish assistant who might be able to assist) and the doors to the Church are open, you will be able to unite in prayer of the Holy Rosary. In Fátima, the Rosary occurs prior to almost every Holy Mass at the Chapel of the Apparitions.4

ENTRANCE HYMN: ALL STAND
There are many hymns sung from memory in Portugal as well as hymns prepared by the Music Ministry. If this segment is not sung, it can be recited. Here is the Entrance Hymn for World Youth Day in Lisbon 2023, August 1 mass as an example.5
GREETING:
At the end of the entrance hymn, the priest and the congregation remain standing and make the sign of the cross to signal the beginning of the prayer of the Holy Mass. It is customary for those who enter the Church after this segment to remain silent as the people have begun to pray. As St. Thomas Aquinas teaches in his “prayer before mass”:
“Almighty and ever-living God, we approach the sacrament of Your only-begotten Son Our Lord Jesus Christ.
We come to the doctor of life unclean to the fountain of mercy, blind to the radiance of eternal light, and poor and needy to the Lord of Heaven and Earth”.
The people together gathered at the Church are in fact together to make this basic request:
“Lord, in your great generosity, heal our sickness, wash away our defilements, enlighten our blindness, enrich our poverty, and clothe our nakedness.
May we receive the bread of angels, the King of kings and Lord of lords, with humble reverence, with the purity and faith, the repentance and love, and the determine purpose that will help to bring us to salvation.
May we receive the sacrament of the Lord’s Body and Blood, and its reality and power. Loving Father, as on our earthly pilgrimage we now receive your beloved Son in the holy sacrifice of this Mass, may we one day see him face to face in glory, who lives and reigns with You for ever. Amen.”
[After the hymn, the priest begins the prayer of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass with the Sign of the Cross]:
PRIEST:

LITURGIA DA PALAVRA
Before Vatican II, the structure of the mass was articulated in Latin, with many segments that the masses did not understand without an education in basic Latin. Also, the readings were conducted in Latin and often sung. After Vatican II, the mass settings and readings took on the language of the vernacular, and thus for readings in Portuguese, one might go to a bookshop to request the book “Missal Quotidiano” (Dominical e Ferial) published by Paulus (2010).

PRIEST:
Vós, Senhor, sois verdadeiramente Santo e todas as criaturas cantam os
PRIEST:
Mistério da fé!
CONGREGATION. Anunciamos, Senhor, a vossa morte, proclamamos a vossa ressurreição. Vinde, Senhor Jesus!
PRIEST:
Celebrando agora, Senhor,
PRIEST OR CONCELEBRANT TO THE MASS
dai, Senhor, a salvação e a paz ao mundo inteiro;
CONGREGATION: Amen.

FOOTNOTES
NOTE: It takes about 6 months to one year of serious daily mass and Rosary attendance to master the texts of the Rosary and the Holy Mass in Portuguese (with minimal to no background in this language). Don’t feel frustrated if you don’t catch everything at once. There is a learning curve required, even for those who already speak Portuguese from Brazil, an example. Continental Portuguese mass might seem swift, as will the sermons, and it can take time to adjust to the sheer speed and sound combinations. With perseverance, you can do it!
Note that Our Lady told St. Louis Marie de Montfort that the best penance a priest can give to someone at the sacrament of reconciliation is to pray the Rosary in a state of grace.
For the entire mass with English Subtitles, go to 38:55. Celebrant and homilist: Cardinal D. Manuel Clemente.
Historically, the Holy Rosary holds a special place in the History of Portugal and is a fitting prologue to the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass (even in a post-Vatican 2 context), due to the powerful cultural resonance that the apparitions of the Blessed Virgin Mary had on Portugal when she revealed herself as Our Lady of the Rosary to three shepherd children, St. Jacinta, St. Francisco, and Venerable Lúcia at Fátima.
Also important in Portugal, as is evident in the text of the Rosary prayers curated by pastors in Fátima, Braga, etc. are the apparitions to St. Catherine Labouré where Our Lady appeared in Paris, France and taught the prayers of the Miraculous Medal which are in Portugal also uttered after each decade with the Fátima prayer at the Chapel of the Apparitions at the Shrine: “O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee.” In the original French is the prayer « O Marie conçue sans péché priez pour nous qui avons recours à vous ». Link to the following video for the background on this prayer.
In 432, the Council of Ephesus proclaimed that Mary is the Mother of God. Thus, the 1830 invocation is now part of the Rosary prayers in much of the world, and is especially revered in Portugal. These apparitions by Our Lady in Portugal have obviously influenced the preparatory time before the mass in Portugal, especially in the North and in/around Coimbra / Fátima and so many other places in Portugual where the Terço (five decades of the Rosary) is offered to Jesus in a reparative way. Many regularly for Portugal with this intention said at the end of each dedcade: “Salvai-nos, salvai Portugal”. This repeated prayer arises from the messages given to the three shepherd children, St. Jacinta, St. Francisco, and Beata Lúcia in the Cova da Iria in 1917 from May 13 to Oct. 13 before the war.
In those apparitions, the children were told to pray the Rosary every day for peace in the world and to end the war.
To this day, many people in Portugal still have a very strong devotion to the Holy Rosary and to Our Lady of Fátima who is one of the main influences impacting the inclusion of the Holy Rosary in JMJLISBOA / JMJLISBON / JMJ / WORLD YOUTH DAY icon.
The Archbishop of Lisbon explains in the following video why the Rosary was inserted into the World Youth Day logo. In the same video, one can learn to recite both the “Pai Nosso” and the “Ave Maria” in Portuguese, which are two prayers that allow you to learn most of the Rosary in Portuguese. Padre Nuno walks you through the Rosary on NOSSA SENHORA.
Exultareis e sereis saciados, exultareis e sereis saciados
Aclamai a glória do nome do Senhor
Trema diante dele a terra inteira
[people in a congregration will demonstrate their sorrow by beating at their breast as a gesture, for the most part, only].
