INTERVIEW LIVE RECORD FEATURES FR. THADDAEUS LANCTON, MIC VISITING THE ROSARY HOUR PODCAST FROM THE NATIONAL SHRINE OF THE DIVINE MERCY (STOCKBRIDGE, MA, USA)
FR. LANCTON: “The most efficacious prayer for the souls in purgatory so that they can enter heaven is the Holy Mass.”
“So for me as a priest that's offering the Holy Mass for the lay faithful, it's participating in the Holy Mass, especially through Holy Communion.”
“And what the Vatican is speaking of in regard to this holy year and a second plenary indulgence is that we can obtain a plenary indulgence for ourselves on a given day, and now we can offer a second plenary indulgence but only for the Holy Souls in purgatory.”
FOR THIS POST, FR. THAD's VIDEO EXPLORES HOW TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF 2nd HOLY MASS in the JUBILEE ORDINARY for the SAKE OF THE HOLY SOULS.
The goal of today's post and other posts on Purgatory allows us to focus on the Holy Souls as part of a growing movement to actively partake in the transporting of more souls into Heaven. Subtitles in Portuguese by Travessa da Senra Hous Press (Porto, Portugal).
CANON LAW REGARDING HOLY COMMUNION & THE HOLY MASS
“Now, the rule up to now has been that you can only receive one plenary indulgence a day, whether for yourself or for the souls in purgatory. And the church since 1984, the new code of Canon Law, has insisted that people can only receive Holy Communion twice in a day if they attend a full second Mass.”
“And that was to avoid some abuses before Vatican II where people would attend, in air quotes, “Masses”. For instance, at the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C. There are so many side altars, they would go from altar to altar and “receive” Holy Communion at these “Masses” without actually attending the Masses (as if the multiplicity of receiving eight Holy Communions in one morning meant that they were growing in holiness more than others). So that's the reason why the Vatican put a cap at two, because the idea is that it's not just about the number of times as much as the depth with which I participate.”
SUPERNATURAL CHARITY
“And the point here is that we can grow in supernatural charity — the idea being it's not just our love for others on a human level, but also love for the souls in purgatory whom we don't see; so, it requires faith, that we can grow in supernatural charity by offering that second plenary indulgence for them through receiving Holy Communion a second time. And so that then becomes the act of charity: doing that extra step in a given day and offering it specifically for the relief of the Holy Souls.”
ABOUT REV. FR. THADDAEUS LANCTON, MIC3
Fr. Thaddaeus Lancton, MIC is the Formator of Marian Seminarians, Steubenville, Ohio.

YEAR OF PRAYER CHALLENGE #1: OFFER TO PRAY THE MYSTERIES of the HOLY ROSARY WITH ONE OTHER PERSON TODAY.
JUBILEE 2025 CHALLENGE #2: HOW TO PREPARE YOUR HEART FOR SOULS
Who would you be willing to offer a second Holy Mass for tomorrow?
For the 2025 Jubilee Ordinary, the Rosary Hour Podcast wishes to encourage all the Faithful to take advantage of this year of Grace.
Pastors need help reminding all who are able to write down a list of people to pray for at a SECOND HOLY MASS in the next 300+ days for the sake of the Holy Souls.
Can you think of someone in your life who has died and who might be calling you to pray for them in this way?
Maybe you have lost a loved one - a friend, your grandfather, your grandmother; a priest, a sister, a brother, a mom or dad. Maybe you know someone who cannot go to Church and who cannot participate in this Jubilee opportunity to draw from the Treasury of the Church.
If you can imagine for a moment … the joy and relief it would bring the soul you could pray for as a proxy — in this time of grace, would you embrace the chance to help them by receive a Holy Communion on their behalf? Think of the wonderful gift the Church is offering to all pilgrims of hope and the lovely gesture of Faith that it causes us to have — like the Faith of the Centurian?
If you can make this sacrifice of time to attend a second Holy Mass for them, perhaps even when you go on vacation, you and your family can make a difference to the destiny of a Holy Soul!
ST. IGNATIUS OF LOYOLA TELLS US HOW TO PRAY AFTER HOLY COMMUNION AT BOTH HOLY MASSES IN THE JUBILEE ORDINARY:
Have this prayer in front of you when you do so, if you so choose:
“ANIMA CHRISTI” which you can recite for YOURSELF and FOR THE HOLY SOUL for which you are offering to receive a 2nd Holy Communion as recommended by St. Ignatius of Loyola
Note: all the Faithful are invited to recite with a priest as a congregation or silently after receiving with great reverence the Holy Eucharist:
“ANIMA CHRISTI”
Soul of Christ, sanctify me.
Corpus Christi, save me.
Blood of Christ, inebriate me.
Water from the side of Christ, wash me.
Passion of Christ, strengthen me.
O Good Jesus, hear me.
Within thy wounds, hide me.
Never permit me to be separated from Thee.
From the malignant enemy, defend me.
At the hour of my death, call me.
And command me to come to Thee,
That with Thy saints I may praise Thee,
Forever and ever.
Amen.

III.-Works of mercy and penance
In addition, the faithful will be able to obtain the Jubilee Indulgence if, with a devout spirit, they participate in popular missions, spiritual exercises, or formation activities on the documents of the Second Vatican Council and the Catechism of the Catholic Church, held in a church or other suitable place, according to the mind of the Holy Father.
Despite the rule that only one plenary indulgence can be obtained per day (cf. Enchiridion Indulgentiarum, IV ed., norm. 18, § 1), the faithful who have carried out an act of charity on behalf of the souls in Purgatory, if they receive Holy Communion a second time that day, can obtain the plenary indulgence twice on the same day, applicable only to the deceased (this must take place within a Eucharistic celebration; see can. 917 and the Pontifical Commission for the authentic interpretation of the CIC, Responsa ad dubia, 1, 11 July 1984). Through this double act, a praiseworthy exercise of supernatural charity is carried out, through that bond by which the faithful still journeying on this earth are united in the mystical Body of Christ, with those who have already completed their journey, by virtue of the fact that “the Jubilee indulgence, thanks to the power of prayer, is intended in a particular way for those who have gone before us, so that they may obtain full mercy” (Spes non confundit, 22).
In a special way "during the Holy Year, we are called to be tangible signs of hope for those of our brothers and sisters who experience hardships of any kind" (Spes non confundit, 10). Therefore, the Indulgence is also linked to certain works of mercy and penance, which bear witness to the conversion undertaken. The faithful, following the example and mandate of Christ, are encouraged to carry out works of charity or mercy more frequently, especially in the service of those brothers and sisters who are burdened by various needs. More especially, they should rediscover these “corporal works of mercy: to feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, clothe the naked, welcome the stranger, heal the sick, visit the imprisoned, and bury the dead " (Misericordiae vultus, 15) and rediscover also "the spiritual works of mercy: to counsel the doubtful, instruct the ignorant, admonish sinners, comfort the afflicted, forgive offences, bear patiently those who do us ill, and pray for the living and the dead" (ibid.).
